We want to arrange a Youth Exchange for young parents (with their children). This youth exchange will target young people who lack parenting skillls, they will be supported by both a member of staff & volunteer who come with the group(s) and also professional staff here in the UK. The idea of this exchange is that a professional creche will be provided in the morning in order to let us work directly with the young mums (and dads) with less distractions around parenting skills, then in the afternoon we will arrange workshops letting the young people practice what they have learnt.

Date: May 2007 one week
We are planning to host a youth exchange with a UK group, we currently have a group in London & possibly one from Scotland who could join this exchange and we are looking for a partner for a bi-lateral youth exchange (we will also consider a tri-lateral)
We will host a preparation meeting in April 2007 for two days to finalise the programme and agree with partners practicalities in relation to the venue, rules etc.

Venue: Peak District UK

Group: 8 young people (with one or two babies or children under the age of 5 years)
The mothers and/or fathers will bring the babies & children as part of the project. Each group should bring 2 staff (can be one member of staff and one responsible volunteer). The roles of these people will be one – social work/mentoring support to the young people & two – support for the children/babies (in addition to paid childcare staff)

Costs: There are no costs for participation, however participants will need to pay 30% of travel costs for participants and possibly 100% of travel costs for babies & children (we are currently trying to find a solution to contribute to this costs, so don’t be put off if this is difficult).

Programme
The intention of this youth exchange is to bring together young parents who lack parenting skills. This can be mums, dads or couples who have one or two children under the age of five. During the mornings we will provide a crèche with qualified childcare professionals in order to work concretely with the young people around their support needs, and skills development. In the afternoons there will be sessions arranged for the parents to use the skills they have learnt in activities with their children. Below is a draft timetable, yet to be formalised.
On two evenings during the exchange there will be babysitting provided at all other times young people will be responsible for their own children. It will not be allowed that young people baby-sit for other parents, however if the group leaders choose to offer this for their participants on one evening this is acceptable.

We have space for an addittional partner to join us, but we need your expressions of interest very soon as we will apply for the project 1st November deadline and we need original signature pages.
